“The Road Not Taken” in a nutshell. I sincerely hope Robert Frost isn’t turning over in his grave…

Life tip: bad days can be cured instantly by puppies. Even if one of them tries to bite your face off …
I found this image on twitter. It’s sweeping through every social media portal, being branded as the “VJ Day photo of our Time.” Passion amidst chaos - inspiring.
For over a year now, I’ve been begging, pleading, day-dreaming, drooling, pining (you get my drift) … for a DSLR. Obviously money has been keeping that dream from becoming a reality. However, on Tuesday, I finally adopted my new baby: a Nikon D3100.
As many of you maybe read on my Facebook, twitter or elsewhere, I lost my mentor and professor from a stroke over the weekend. Robert Mark had a significant role in inspiring me to be the professional I am today and losing him has left a strange void. He had incredible passion, spirit and talent and my conversations with him were nothing short of priceless. One of the things we spent hours talking about was photography. We both had experience with film photography and we would randomly message each other to share the latest photoshop trick we’d learned. His home in Houghton is full of gorgeous photos he’d taken, yet another talent to add to the list of his many, many attributes.
His memorial service was on Tuesday and after it ended Derek and I just felt empty. We felt restless and void, like we needed to do something adventurous. If you knew Bob Mark, you’d know he was adventure-hungry. His business partner spoke beautiful words about him at the service. One of my favorite lines was “When Bob did something, he didn’t simply ease into it. He didn’t just get his pilot’s license, he bought a plane. He didn’t just join an organization, he became the president.”
We spent the drive back wondering how we could do something “Bob Mark style” to honor the day. While we thought about buying a plane and learning to fly, a camera seemed a little more practical and would honor the passion for photography I shared with him. So to Best Buy we went, and left with my new baby. My family all pooled in for my birthday to help with the cost, so thank you all for that. It’s perhaps the best Birthday gift I’ve ever received.
And Bob Mark, I hope my photos make you proud.
